Baltimore
Today in class we did not do any work on ancient western civilization, but we talked about the riots in Baltimore. It is a very frustrating thing but it is important to understand this so that we are hopefully not dumb enough to repeat it.
Roman Forum. Coliseum. Circus Maxims, Aqueducts
Today in class we researched these following things:
ROMAN FOURM- a place, meeting, or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue
can be exchanged. At the center of most Roman cities was a big open
space called the Forum. People met there to do business, to sell things and buy
things, to see their friends, to find out about the news, and even to go to
school. Usually the Forum had stone pavement, and around the edges there were
fancy buildings: temples, and basilicas, and sometimes stores (shops). In some
cities the Forum had a platform in it that people could stand on to make
speeches. This platform was called the Rostra.
COLISEUM- Measuring some 620 by 513 feet (190 by 155
meters), the Colosseum was the largest amphitheater in the Roman world. Unlike
many earlier amphitheaters, which had been dug into hillsides to provide
adequate support, the Colosseum was a freestanding structure made of stone and
concrete. The distinctive exterior had three stories of arched entrances–a
total of around 80–supported by semi-circular columns. Each story contained
columns of a different order (or style): At the bottom were columns of the
relatively simple Doric order, followed by Ionic and topped by the ornate
Corinthian order. Located just near the main entrance to the Colosseum was the
Arch of Constantine, built in A.D. 315 in honor of Constantine I’s victory over
Maxentius at Pons Milvius.
CIRCUS MAXIMUS- The Circus Maximus was a chariot
racetrack in Rome first constructed in the 6th century BCE. The Circus was also
used for other public events such as the Roman Games and gladiator fights and
was last used for chariot races in the 6th century CE. It was partially
excavated in the 20th century CE and then remodeled but it CONTINUES today as
one of the modern city’s most important public spaces, hosting huge crowds at
music concerts and rallies.
AQUADUCTS- Ancient Roman Aqueducts. An aqueduct is a
water supply or navigable channel constructed to convey water. In modern
engineering, the term is used for any system of pipes, ditches, canals,
tunnels, and other structures used for this purpose. 260 miles of duct 30mi of

Going over Test
Today in class we went over the test for the most part. We didn't have the answer sheet so we were, in a way, retaking the test as a class. I got an 86 on the test which satisfies me. Then we also learned a story of a mans whose name i forget. the man was told as a child that he would kill his dad and marry his own mother. He ends up doing exactly that and he gouges his eyes out so that he never has to see people again.

The Odessy
Today in class we took notes on some slides and ten for the rest of class you read us a section of the Odessy. it was actually to my surprise very interesting unlike the book we are reading in English, Into the Wild. It was also very understandable unlike Shakespeare. It was the tale of how Odesyes and part of his crew outwit a giant cyclops that is going to eat them all. they get him drunk and stab him in the eye. then they hold onto the undercarriage of his flock of sheep so when he let the sheep out into the field they can run away. cyber day: Greek Buildings
This is known as a Parthenon and is a very important structure that was created in Athens Greece. It was made of ivory and had beautiful gold designs on them. They were dedicated to their God athena and were made primarily of slabs stacked on top of each other to create pillars, a design that would stick around and is still used today.
This is an amphitheater and is another large engineering feat of the Ancient Greeks. It is the first ever version of a theater ever created and there are even some in existence today. they were made of the rock in the side of the hill it was placed on. The use of this is for many people to be able to view something at once.
This is a structure known as a peristyle court and they were common among Greek city-states. they were most commonly made of ivory. this is a structure that was like a square doughnut. it is a square building with a square hole in the middle in which you were able to access for whatever the space was used for. this was a common theme for many temples in which to worship Gods and the design is still used today.

Going Over Test
Today in class we got our tests back and went over the answers to all the questions. i got all but 5 correct, they were all ones that i was unsure about. i didn't know that the Sphinx was built 4500 years ago, i didn't know an artisan would not be in the white kilt class even though i would have swore i put that as my answer, i disagree that the farmers would need board games because i never gave them that but thats OK ill lose points for a question WITH MORE THAN ONE CORRECT ANSWER.. thats all i have to say about that that. then we went over the powerpoint from our cyber day.

Cyber day 3
I learned many things on the first seven slides that i read.the first thing that i learned is that all of the worlds great civilizations were built on rivers.Mesopotamia had the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers, Egypt had the Nile River India had the Indus River, and China had the Huang He River. The significance of Greece's location is that it is a peninsula in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. Greece is covered in mountains that span long beyond the boarders of Greece. Greece is also surrounded by many powerful places like Italy and Egypt, this means that they had to be strong enough to hold there own in war situations. the main body of water that surround Greece is the Mediterranean sea. however the Aegean sea boarders the left of Greece and the Adriatic sea surrounds the left. The large island beneath Greece is named Crete and i modernly a part of Greece. Athens is on the inner coast off the Aegean sea, Sparta is more land based on the southern tip of Greece but closer to the Adriatic Sea.

We learned about the Pharaohs and the pyramids. i learned that the pyramids were made by craftsmen and that they used to be covered in marble. I also learned that they discovered the seasons and that Pharaohs can be thrown out. This was a very progress not taking filled day in west civ.

Today in class we did the pyramid challenge. We attempted to construct a pyramid. we had to choose all of the right aspects. You have to choose the right god, material, food, payment, and so on. My group finished first and we got an A. I tried to do it again but then i just didn't want to fail so i stopped. it took me about 10 tries, and some mean process of elimination to get the right conditions for building the pyramid.

First Cyber Day
1. the first thing that ancient Egyptians created that i find amazing are the huge pyramid tombs that they made for their pharaohs. these tombs took close to 30 years to create and they were made mostly by farmers. they are STILL STANDING TODAY.
2. another creation of the ancient Egyptians that i find quite cool and innovative is the spears and arrows with bronze tips. these were the first full metal jacket weapons.
3. another great thing that they created were the chariots. people in ancient Egypt would use these to ride around in . they were especially used to ride around in by the military. they were pulled by horses.
4. Another thing that the ancient Egyptians did that was very innovative is the use of reeds to make papyrus paper. they used this paper to write there hieroglyphics and hyratics on.
5. The ancient Egyptians even created there on written language out of pictures and symbols. this is a huge feat for anyone to create your own written language used throughout the whole place of Egypt.

Guns Germs and Steele 3
we completely finished the movie today. In the end of the movie he was able to answer the question that the New Guinean asked him in the beginning of the film. Although he is not done with his theory yet, and still has much more research to do on it, he is much further in understanding why some places are truly so much more developed than others. After this you asked us what questions we thought would be on the test Monday and we gave examples from our notes. we have a test first thing Monday morning but i feel that i am well prepared for it.

Guns Germs and Steel 2
Today in class we all but finished the movie. It summed up Jarred's point about how wealth and development of an area was just luck of the draw. he believed that no one breed of human was superior or smarter than the other. he believes that since people with beneficial plants and animals to continue feeding themselves. this stock of food allowed people to specialize and begin inventing new things for themselves. Jarred truly believes that all of the spread of advancement across the world started with something as simple but as important as the food sources they were dealing with, both plants and animals.

Guns Germs and Steel
today we continued the movie Guns Germs and Steel. The movie went back to the roots of ancient civilization to discover why some countries are so much more advanced than others. we looked at how much the resources that were available affected your development. that places that were further along seem to have came from the luck of the draw. we learned that plants and animals played a huge part in the development of civilization. in the end it came down from location.

2/2/15
Today in class we took notes on a movie written by jarred diamond named something Germs and Steel. it was based off of a book that was inspired by one seemingly simple question. Someone from New Gunnie asked him why he had so much more than them. he traveled back to a time when everyone was almost equal. At the roots he is beginning to discover why it is so that some places are so advanced, and some are so far behind others.

westciv 1-27-15
today Mr. Shick was not in class so another teacher took roll, and we all studied. I pulled up your blogspot and read the new posts that you had made. The test has been pushed back to give us more time to study. I went to the power-point you uploaded and reviewed it making sure i understood all of the material. Then i had nothing better to do than finish my blog for tonight. I will spend the rest of class reviewing and doing homework.
Saturday, January 24, 2015
I do believe i finally fixed my blogger account. On Friday we talked all about the different eras of prehistoric humans. We talked about how humans evolved and progressed over time. At first all humans cared about was finding their next meal. Once the people started to develop tools, and they began specializing in their jobs/tasks they preformed daily. They began to set up more penitent settlements and storing up food. They also began to have farms to grow crops and irrigate water into the land as they continued to progress into the historic era, where they began keeping track and writing things down.
